How To Set Smarter Goals To Avoid Falling Off Track

When you want to make a difference in the way you look and feel setting goals is essential.

Goals keep you motivated, giving you an idea of where you are now and where you want to be so you can plan your way to a better you.

However, sometimes people take this vital step for granted, setting unrealistic and unachievable goals which leave them always falling short of that goal and unmotivated to continue on their health and fitness journey.

So when you’re setting goals, avoid disappointment and instead think SMART.

Specific

The first thing you need to do when setting goals is to make sure the result you’re wanting is specific.

Wanting to “be slimmer” is not a specific goal and not having that specific goal to achieve but rather a general idea is a sure way to see your motivation decrease.

Having a specific goal also allows you to better plan on how to achieve it. For example, you want to lose 5kg of fat? Great, now you can start researching the best course of action for fat loss, what you should be including in your diet and what kind of exercises will be the most effective for you to reach your goal.

Measurable

Having a specific goal in mind is essential but you also need to make sure you can actually measure your progress in your journey to achieve this goal.

You can choose the measurement best suited to you and your goal. If you’re looking at bodily changes we recommend tracking using a combination of body weight scales, body measurements and progress photos to get the most accurate results.

However, if you’re looking at performance-based results you could track what speed you can reach when running or what weights you’re able to lift.

Whatever method you use to track your progress just make sure it’s accurately showing your progress.

Achievable

Raise your hand if you’ve been guilty of setting unrealistic expectations for yourself.

It’s only human to set high standards for ourselves but when it comes to your health and fitness goals if you’re not considering what’s achievable for you and your lifestyle you’re just setting yourself up for failure.

If you’re working full-time, running after the kids the rest of the time and barely have a minute to yourself then setting a goal to lose 10 kilos in a month just might not achievable for you. So maybe you make that goal for 4 months to give yourself the time you need.

Relevant

If your goals don’t align with what you truly want in your life, then you’re wasting your time.

In order to make real progress and achieve your goals you need to be motivated and how this goal will improve your life.

You want to lose weight? Great, now think about why you want this and why it’s relevant to your life. Make a list defining why this goal is important to you and when you find complacency settling in make sure to go back and re-read this list to keep you on track and motivated.

Time Bound

The most important thing in setting any goal is to put a time limit on it.

After-all, a goal with no end is just a dream.

Putting a time limit on your goal keeps you accountable in the meantime and pushes you to put a plan in place to achieve that goal and take the steps necessary to get to where you want to be.
